Behind the scenes

  • Conan O'Brien

Conan was very friendly and he cooperated with me for my photo ideas. I wanted to shoot something to do with the stage curtains and asked him to appear between the two curtains. He did it spontaneously. I went to his office on another occasion a few years later, I saw my photograph of him framed and displayed in his office. I was happy to see it.

  • Celine Dion

Celine Dion was very nice, but she appeared to be a little uncertain before the photoshoot. Her husband was accompanying her and encouraged her to be photographed. Once I started to photograph her, she knew what to do. She was a real pro.

  • Chris Rock

I had an idea of how to photograph Chris Rock shaving his face while looking into a car mirror. On the way to meet him, I bought a shaver and cream from a dollar store. Chris accepted my idea with some hesitation. We went outside and found a big trucker parked in the street. I asked the truck driver for permission to use his truck. The driver was agreeable. I had a good time photographing Chris Rock.

  • Jennifer Lopez

I got this job to photograph Jennifer Lopez in Manhattan when she was a rising star. Usually, I have a window of opportunity to photograph these celebrities, but I was given more time than usual. I didn’t feel such a good connection with her, maybe it wasn’t a good day for her. I felt she was not in the mood to be photographed. But, Jennifer tried her best to cooperate.

  • Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey was a very funny guy to shoot with. I met him in a regular, plain business office. Nothing there to create a good image. However, I saw a plant standing in the corner that you find any office. I decided to use it and asked Jim to imagine being in a jungle and peering out of the brushes. He gave me all kinds of expressions to work with. I was very happy with the result despite the situation of having a plain environment to photograph in.

  • Sheryl Crow

I was told that Shery Crow would meet me on the street in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. I was very nervous in case we might miss each other. I was in the spot where I was told she would show up. I saw a lady walking toward me and I noticed right away who she was. I explained my ideas and she did everything I asked her to do without showing any difficulty. This shot was made through a door window that belonged to one of the brownstone apartments. I really love this moody shot.
